CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Macey held up during the drive as she fell back on her slayer side, letting a few minutes’ meditation settle her down before setting off.

She took one of the black SUVs and cringed at the remnants of battle still on her skin. She intentionally hadn’t showered hoping it would keep Lucifer at bay. But she doubted it would.

Over the past few months he had been trying to reach out to her and she had slammed him out of her life, not liking the road it had taken her down by being with him.

She turned the music up and took a deep breath, opening the window to let in some of the cold air as dawn would soon threaten.

It wasn’t all his fault. She had craved for him to take from her. To strengthen their bond by letting him feed on her essence when they made love. Wanting every piece of him as possible as she had unwittingly fed off him, too.

Lucifer had warned her of the risks, but she hadn’t listened and he hadn’t wanted her to—both of them so far gone with each other that rationale had sneaked out of the door.

He never told her what he was, but there were rumors. Fallen angel was the one that had stuck, his name being the main trigger for it, and it was a great tool for instilling fear in all races who worshipped him.

He was favored among them. Treated like a god who both charmed and put the fear into them with his power. A ruler of sorts. And she had been drawn to him just as much as the others were.

They had been enemies for a while. But teasing each other rather than taking it serious.

She had come to use him for intelligence, and he would ask only for a friendship that eventually blossomed into more.

He said she had intrigued him. Not jumping to his every word or trying to jump into his pants like every other woman around him. She had driven him to distraction, and he had worked to gain her as the prize.

Macey thought back to their first kiss. Ironically over a game of chess as it reflected the game they had been playing with each other since they had first met. She had been unsettled from the hunt, and ended up on his doorstep.

He had quickly gotten rid of his guests, always a party at Lucifer’s, and poured her a glass of wine. Getting the chessboard out and surprising her once more.

The more they had played that night, the more intense the air had become around them. But she hadn’t given in first. She had refused to, eager to break his calm demeanor and wipe the smug look off his face.

It hadn’t taken long to break him as she had concentrated on the game. And he had finally flung the board out of the way and leaned across the small table, the fire flickering from the large fireplace they sat in front of in the eighteenth-century furnished room.
